Christmas in the County Event

On Sunday, December the 9th, the Austin Young Lawyers’ Association (AYLA) in coordination with the Dripping Springs 4H Horse Project hosted a Christmas in the Country event for almost 240 foster children from Hays, Travis and Williamson counties.  All of these kids are in foster care, group homes, or wards of the State.  This is the fifth year the 4H group has assisted, and the first year that they were heavily involved in the planning and coordination of the party.

The event was held at the Polo Club in Dripping Springs.  The 4H group provided more than twenty horses, all decorated in holiday attire, bells and bows.  The guests of honor were mounted on horses and led around inside the covered arena.  For some of these kids, this may be the first time they were ever on a horse.  Many of the children return year after year and make fast friends of the ponies, horse owners and handlers.

Alan Pogue and Sue DeLaurentis of Imagine a Horse brought two of their wonderful horses and conducted a trick horse show for all the attendees.  The children (and adults!) were amazed by the coordinated antics of these talented equine showmen.  North Hays County Fire Department had a new pump truck for the kids to enjoy and Kelly Boeson of Driving Me Buggy brought a horse drawn covered wagon and gave rides all afternoon.  Dripping Springs Party Rentals donated a Moon Bounce for the party, but threatening weather kept it from being deployed.

The jury is still out on who had a better time Sunday; the kids that the event was held for, or the groups and individuals who gave their time to bring this effort together.  In any case, everyone is already planning for next year’s event and looking forward to continuing a wonderful Holiday tradition
